Top 5 Places that Must Be Cleaned This Spring

It’s that time of year again: spring cleaning. Whether you’re planning your office reopening after a long, uncertain year or simply want to refresh your workplace for the coming season, you want to make sure you cover all your bases. Let’s go over the top five places you must clean this spring.

1. Office Breakroom

Your janitorial cleaning services should clean your break room on a daily basis. That said, when’s the last time you conducted a deeper clean in this crucial area? Perhaps you haven’t since last spring or before. Whatever the case, take this opportunity to thoroughly clean and possibly reorganize your break room. A fresh, bright, hygienic break room is essential for maintaining high morale and productivity -- no one wants to spend their lunch break in a dusty, drab room. Every inch of your break room should receive the spring cleaning treatment, including walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, appliances, etc.

2. Facility Exterior

Chances are winter weather did a number on your facility’s exterior. At the very least, your exterior surfaces will harbor some visible dirt, salt, and grime that dampens your property’s curb appeal. In many instances, winter conditions cause cracks and other problems that require springtime repairs. Whatever the case, you’ll want to thoroughly wash your siding, trim, windows, and other exterior surfaces once spring arrives to revive your property’s outward appearance and prepare it for repairs and touch-ups. A pressure washer will make this process go smoother, but be careful around windows -- while some windows can be pressure washed, proper and safe window cleaning usually requires manual scrubbing.

3. Gutters and Downspouts

If you want to keep moisture from accumulating on and around your facility, you must ensure that your gutters are functioning properly. Of course, if your gutters are clogged, cracked, and/or warped, they won’t do their job properly, if at all. And with spring/summer rains on the horizon, the sooner you get your gutters back in action, the better. This is why gutter/downspout cleaning should be a top priority on your spring commercial cleaning checklist.

4. HVAC System Components

Your workplace’s indoor air quality (IAQ) plays a major role in determining the health and happiness of employees, guests, and customers. Impure, dust-filled air isn’t just a nuisance but can also do real harm to one’s lungs and skin. Moreover, particles in the air can carry viruses and bacteria. For all these reasons, you must ensure that your building is well-ventilated. The warmer weather offered by spring and summer may allow you to open up windows and doors, but it’s crucial to keep your heating, cooling, and ventilation components in check, too. This spring, clean your air ducts and system components and change out your electrostatic air filters as recommended by the manufacturer. While you’re at it, install personal air quality meters in your facility to keep tabs on your IAQ levels.

5. Commercial Carpeting

Speaking of indoor air quality, unclean commercial floors can negatively affect IAQ and pose other safety hazards. In particular, carpets attract dust, dirt, and other contaminants much more easily than solid, smooth floors. Vacuuming should take place at least twice weekly in a typical office, but deeper office carpet cleaning (i.e., steam cleaning, shampooing, etc.) should be performed every few months or as needed in order to remove built-up dirt, stains, and other issues. This level of carpet cleaning will help improve your office’s IAQ, morale, and, of course, overall appearance.
