The terms “pressure washing” and “power washing” are usually used interchangeably. Technically, pressure washing only refers to cleaning via pressurized water, whereas power washing refers to a heating component on top of pressurized water.
With the help of an engine, a pressure washer compresses air and pumps water through a nozzle to release a jet of water and cleaning solution at high speeds. This high amount of pressure allows the stream to reach long distances and deeply clean the targeted surfaces. In some cases, heat is added to the system to increase cleaning efficiency (power washing).
Though pressure washing offers one of the most efficient cleaning methods, it’s not always the best cleaning solution. Some materials and features are at higher risk of damage from pressure washing and should instead be cleaned by hand or otherwise gentler means. When properly performed, pressure washing is optimal for cleaning durable surfaces at a particular distance.
