Using Emotional Intelligence to Create a Positive Work Atmosphere

Using emotional intelligence creates a positive atmosphere at work. Acknowledging when a coworker is feeling overwhelmed or stress leads to a workplace that runs like a smooth office team.

Lisa:

Come in.

Dakota:

Hey.

Lisa:

Hey.

Dakota:

Alright, look, I need my paycheck today.

Lisa:

I can’t help you with that today.

Dakota:

I mean, is there nothing, how could I, you know, could we talk to a manager or something?

Lisa:

You can, and that’s how the process starts.

Dakota:

Well, then I’ll go get Ron. He’s here, right?

Lisa:

They’re all gone. They’re all gone. All the managers are gone. We have to start this tomorrow. And I’m about to shut down.

Dakota:

I need this right now.

Lisa:

I can’t help you with that. I’m sorry.

Dakota:

Okay. I just got a call. I have medical bills piling up. I’ve got the managers on my butt this morning. I was driving, getting-

Lisa:

You need to calm down.

Dakota:

This sucks.

Speaker 3:

Action.

Speaker 4:

So, Budd Group team, I’ve got a question for you. Which drop was it that made that cup over flow? Was it the first one, or was it the last one? Well, the answer is it’s both. In fact, it’s every single drop that went into that cup that caused it to overflow, from the first to the last, and this is not that different from the story that you’re about to see.

Speaker 4:

It may have looked like Dakota walking into that office and exploding at Lisa was a totally isolated and inappropriate event, and in no way am I excusing that type of behavior. But each of us is exactly like this cup, and we are constantly being filled up with water, whether it’s us feeling hurt, or angry, or retaliated against, or just being frustrated. Emotions are sometimes tough to deal with and they’re constantly filling up our cup. And the truth is you just never know how full someone’s cup is. So let’s tune in and see exactly what got Dakota to that point that caused him to tip.

Dakota:

Call Ron Exam.

Ron:

This is Ron.

Dakota:

Hey Ron, this is Dakota. I was just calling to let you know that I’m going to be at work just probably right on time because the traffic is terrible this morning.

Ron:

Okay. Hurry up, because we’re swamped.

Dakota:

All right. Yeah, I got you. I’m sorry about that. I’m getting there as quick as I can. Whoa, dude, stay in your lane. Idiot.

Dakota:

What the heck. That is my number. Come on. What is?

Dakota:

All right, so I was trying to ring in here.

Ron:

Okay. Show me.

Dakota:

And then it asks for my number and I put it in and oh, it worked this time. Sorry. It wasn’t working before.

Ron:

Okay. Let’s get back to work. We’re busy.

Dakota:

Oh, Ron. Hey, I mean I got here on time. Is there any way that you could go back in and adjust my clock-in time?

Ron:

No, no, we don’t do that here.

Dakota:

Hello, this is Dakota.

Cassandra:

Hi, Dakota. My name is Cassandra. I’m calling from Signal Health. How are you today?

Dakota:

I’m all right. How are you?

Cassandra:

Good. I’m calling about the outstanding balance of $5,527.00 from your wife’s surgery a few months ago.

Dakota:

Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I’m working on that. I’m in the office right now. I’m going to try to get my paycheck advanced or something so I can take care of that.

Cassandra:

Okay. It is imperative. You are over a month late already.

Dakota:

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I’m sorry about that.

Cassandra:

Okay.

Dakota:

All right. See you.

Lisa:

Come in.

Dakota:

Hey.

Lisa:

Hey.

Dakota:

All right. Look, I need my paycheck today.

Lisa:

I can’t help you with that today.

Speaker 3:

So as you can see, Dakota’s isolated incident wasn’t so isolated after all. It turns out his cup had been filling up with water all day long and by the time he walked into that office, he just had enough, and Lisa was the straw that broke the camel’s back. And it doesn’t have to be stuff that’s happening at work that’s filling up our cups. Sometimes it’s stuff that’s going on at home with family and friends, or maybe it’s just traffic on the way to work. The point is, everybody’s cup is always filling up, and you just never know how full somebody’s cup is.

Speaker 3:

So what I would ask of you, Budd Group teammates, is to try to take stuff out of people’s cups by offering a helping hand or maybe just listening to them as a friend or just treating them with kindness. You never know when a kind word might take a little bit out of someone’s cup.

Speaker 3:

In this story, for instance, it could have turned out much differently had Dakota’s manager treated him with a little bit more respect, or maybe Lisa had responded a little bit more kindly at the end. You just never know. So to wrap it up, just treat others with kindness. Treat them how you would want to be treated. And keep in mind, you never know how full somebody’s cup might be.

Testimonials

Dane Slaughter, Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District

I have worked with The Budd Group since 2011, and I have been very pleased and impressed with their staff, account managers, and regional support they provide. They have been very prompt to respond if there is an issue with the janitorial services. They provide an exceptional service and understand the importance of greeting our passengers and guests to allow them to have a wonderful experience when traveling. I view their service as a partnership and count on them daily to deliver exceptional quality to our tenants, passengers, staff, and business partners.

Guy Harley, Wake Forest University Health Sciences

The Budd Group provides exceptional custodial services for our campus. We are grateful for their service to our patients, families, visitors, staff and faculty for over 40 years. The Budd Group is very responsive to our requests and needs, and we truly believe in their loyalty and commitment to our success.

Billy D. Smith, Kershaw County School District

I personally have had the best experience and relationship with The Budd Group. From their owner all the way to their day porters, they take great pride in representing the company name, and doing the best job they can. During these unprecedented pandemic times The Budd Group has been flexible and responsive to the changing needs our district has had in every way. With every firm that we have used there have been issues, but no firm has ever been as responsive, and as quick to fix whatever the issue may be as The Budd Group!

Nick Mincey, Orange County Schools

The Budd Group has gone above and beyond in providing custodial services to our district. Following a lengthy RFP process, we as a committee selected them to help our district achieve a new and rejuvenating approach to campus cleaning and facility care. We asked them to take on a difficult task of staffing, and preparing schools for the start of our school year with only 6 weeks of transition time. We all knew it would be difficult at best. However, with the help of their Human Resources department and successful hiring strategies, we were up and running by the time our Staff members began to enter the campuses for the school year.

Blaise Winch, Capsugel

The Budd Group has been providing services to Capsugel for over 6 years. The service provided has been excellent and professional. They perform duties in multiple locations including a manufacturing plant, distribution center, office area, machine shop and fitness center. They clean all of the following types of areas at those various locations: office, bathroom, cafeteria, fitness center, locker room, shipping/receiving and CGMP production areas. As it relates to CGMP experience, they also created a sanitation program for the cGMP areas, maintain and created their own operating instructions, maintain document control and follow all cGMP guidelines for hygiene and documentation.

Susan A. Maddux, Presbyterian College

The Budd Group has become a true partner with Presbyterian College. They have taken the time to fully understand our mission and become a true part of the Blue Hose family. The housekeeping staff often pull off miracles when given very little time to clean a space on campus between events. They work long hours and respond 24/7 to emergencies on campus. The landscaping team has transformed the grounds of the campus such that the college regularly gets positive feedback from those who visit the campus. Before outsourcing to The Budd Group, the college performed these services in house. We have seen significant improvement in both housekeeping and grounds since The Budd Group took over.
